Andrea Catzel – Soprano

 Andrea Catzel is a South African soprano whose distinguished operatic career has encompassed a wide range of leading roles across both national and international stages.

Her early career in musical theatre included leading roles in My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, and The Sound of Music. After advanced vocal training in Madrid under mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza, she returned to South Africa as Principal Soprano with CAPAB Opera, earning multiple awards for performances in major operatic roles such as Desdemona (Otello) and Elsa (Lohengrin).

Catzel’s international career took her to Germany’s Gärtnerplatz Theater and Giessen Opera House, where she performed major soprano roles in operas by Mozart, Strauss, and Cherubini.

Her extensive operatic repertoire includes major roles such as Mimi (La Bohème), Eva (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Agathe (Der Freischütz), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Countess (The Marriage of Figaro), Senta (Der fliegende Holländer), Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos), and the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier).

Catzel returned to South Africa in 2001, where she took up a teaching position at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music and served as a vocal coach for Cape Town Opera’s Choral Training Program. She also maintained a private studio, mentoring singers in opera, musical theatre, and crossover styles. A frequent performer on radio and television, she has recorded five CDs, including Spanish Art Songs, the Verdi Requiem, and two albums of Respighi songs for the Netherlands-based Channel Classics label. Since 2005, she has lived in Sydney, Australia, where she remains active as a vocal consultant, teacher, and performer.
